Roughs and finished colors for the cover illo from the second issue of Livewires, the long-out-of-print miniseries I wrote (and occasionally drew) for Marvel 10 years ago. (Ouch.) Colors on the finished piece by my buddy Ryan Kinnaird; all other art by yrs trly.
The first cover rough, showing all of the Livewire mecha being constructed in a nanoassembly tank, was (correctly) judged by editor Tom Brevoort as being too crowded and “busy.” I went back to the drawing board for a simpler version with only “noob mecha” Stem Cell being nanoassembled, while her future teammates look on in the BG; good call on Tom’s part, IMHO.
The final version had text declaring DO NOT DISTURB: NANOASSEMBLY IN PROGRESS or the like (with the type reversed, as if appearing on the outside of the tank they’re looking into), but I lack a decent jpeg of that iteration, alas.
